In 2022, Jet Ice and Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) established a research partnership focused on sustainable ice making. Together, we’re exploring innovative materials and technologies to help reduce the environmental impact of ice-making applications.

Through the Jet Ice Research Chair in Sustainable Materials Chemistry, this collaboration brings together academic research and industry expertise. Our shared goal is to develop smarter, more sustainable solutions for the future of ice sports.

Combining Research and Industry Expertise

TMU brings expertise in materials chemistry, while Jet Ice contributes decades of experience in ice-making technology. By working together, we’re exploring new ways to improve ice performance while reducing environmental impact.

The partnership connects scientific research with practical applications. New materials and technologies could also lead to more efficient, environmentally responsible ice-making practices.

Areas of Research

Our research partnership focuses on several key areas:

  • Sustainable Paint Formulations: Exploring new materials and formulations to reduce the environmental impact of ice paints.
  • Water Quality Enhancement: Investigating techniques that could improve water quality for ice-making applications.
  • Innovative Materials Chemistry: Researching smarter materials that support ice performance and environmental sustainability.

Each area contributes to a broader goal of advancing sustainable ice making through research, innovation, and industry collaboration.

Building a More Sustainable Future

Sustainability is an important part of the future of ice sports. Through this partnership, Jet Ice and TMU are working to explore solutions that balance ice performance with environmental responsibility.

Combining research with practical industry knowledge creates new opportunities for innovation. Our goal is to make ice-making technology more sustainable.

Together, we’re helping shape a more sustainable future for arenas, ice facilities, and the communities that enjoy ice sports.

Through this research partnership, new technologies and sustainable solutions are being developed to improve ice quality while reducing environmental impact.

The research has gained international attention, contributing to ice surface improvements at the Olympic Games in Italy and sparking interest from the NHL. League executives have also visited Impellizzeri’s lab at TMU, leading to further collaboration on sustainability initiatives.
